Orland-oh! from Dolly (Aus), September, 2002

Last year it was "Orlando who?" This year he's so hot, he's scorching! Here are 10 reasons why we can't stop drooling over Mr. Bloom.
Even though he's starring in one of the biggest movies of all time, The Lord Of The Rings, Orlando hasn't let fame go to his head - thanks largely to family and friends.
"I have an older sister, Samantha, who would never let that happen," he said. "I have a cousin who would never let that happen. And I've surrounded myself with friends who would beat me - physically - if for
for a moment I tried to get above myself. And also I think I'm incredibly lucky to be doing what I do. I mean, I have a great job. I get to dress up and become somebody else. Especially when it's someone
like Legolas, who's this super-cool, other-worldly elf. I'm lucky, man, so why would I not appreciate that? I think that I've had an interesting life and I feel very grateful. If I died tomorrow, I'd feel like I've lived a very full life.
I've loved every moment, and through that I've learnt a lot about people and relationships. I try to apply a set of rules to life to make it easier and that normally means just being open and honest so you can enjoy it.
He values friendship
While on-set bonding between the cast is now tattooed in time (literally - the cast got matching tattoos that represent the Fellowship), there was still plenty of fun to be had. "Viggo Mortenson (Aragorn) would go on about
the elves and how they're always doing their nails and brushing their long, blond hair and being all prissy. And I'd just say, 'Well, at least I'm going to live forever! Got that? Live forever!'
We were all a bunch of young guys, so we became really close friends. I have friends for life because of this movie."
He speaks Elvish
Playing an elf isn't just about poise, precision and power, it's also about pronunciation. Learning an ancient and fictional language ain't as easy as it sounds, but Orlando's got it down pat.
And, let's face it, who didn't swoon when he spoke Elvish in the movie? "It's very difficult language to get your mouth around. My first scene on my first day was delivering a line of Elvish to a group of elves, which wasn't the
easiest thing to open with. We were in the studio in New Zealand, it was very hot and I just remember thinking, 'Man, the elves look
really strange.' But it was fun."
He's not in it for the money
Orlando's made it clear that his motivation for acting foes way past the fame and big dollars. In fact, it's actually all about the girls! "I don't care
much about money at all, Frankly, if I get the chance to kiss someone in a movie, they wouldn't need to pay me at all!"
He's an adrenaline junkie (with the scars to prove it!)
You'd never know it now, but Orlando actually broke his back several years ago. His speedy (and complete) recovery is the kind of miracle Hollywood dreams are made of.
But do you think that stopped him doing crazy tricks? Not a chance. "I'm rather accident prone, I have to admit. I've broken my back, my ribs, my nose, both my legs, my arm, my wrist, a finger, a toe, and cracked my skull three times - all over the course of my 24 years. I've
slowed down recently, but I was a bit mad in my youth. I fell out a window a few years ago and broke my back. I had a bit of a miracle recovery. For four day, I faced the prospect of never being able to
walk again. But, after 12 days, I walked out of the hospital. They did an operation and put me back together again. I'm a bit of an adrenaline junkie. I love really mad sports. That's part of the reason why the whole
New Zealand experience was so amazing for me. I went bungee-jumping - I went off the highest bungee-jump in New Zealand six times. To throw yourself in the air with only something attached to your feet is a different head
space altogether. And we
went snowboading and I learned how to surf with the hobbits."
He's down to earth
He's adored by millions of girls worldwide, but Orlando still gets excited by the fact that he's a movie star. "It's all very surreal. I've had fantastic experiences on Rings and Black Hawk Down, and I feel
really lucky to have been a part of both of them. And everything that follows with that is exciting and kind of new to me. It's just something you have to take a day at a time."
He loves LOTR
having to talk about the same movies for three years might seem a bit much, but Orlando isn't fussed. "For me, the second and third book were more exciting. You'll have some great battle sequences. It's like winning the lottery.
I mean, imagine being flown to this amazing country and being taught how to shoot a bow and arrow, learn to ride horses and study swordplay? It was sick!
I was pinching myself. It wasn't until I'd filmed a few scenes that I finally believed it was happening. I hope I carry a part of Legolas with me forever. He's a special, special character. I'm never
going to let go of him."
He's still a London lad at heart
LA is calling and Orlando is definitely answering. But the big move to LA is still a way off yet. "I plan to spend some time in LA in the not too distant future, just because I
think it will be useful to be there when the movie is released. But London is my home and will always be my home. I'll always come back to it."
He's not going anywhere
With a long list of movie projects coming up, there is no much risk of losing Orlando to the "one-hit-wonder" category. And if his acting role models are anything to go by, we'll see him in lots more interesting films.
"I'm just trying to take it a day at a time, and enjoy it all for what it is. I know you can be up one minute and drop the next, so I'm trying to maintain a steady course so that I have some longevity.3
I think Johnny Depp had made some interesting choices, and he's preserved his integrity. I admire that in an actor. I also think Edward Norton's had a very interesting career. And, although Daniel Day Lewis hasn't has such a huge career, I love what he's done, too."
At this stage, Orlando's single, and (if you live in Melbourne) you might have come across him filming Ned Kelly. Rumour has it he was engaged to British gal, Jemma Kidd. But, for not at least,
he's footloose and fancy free. Look out!
